Accident resurrects debate on airport

I don't think the military people will like commercial, or private airplanes landing near their base. We are at war, so they want privacy.

Also I'm wondering what they're going to build on the possible unnocuppied land at the current location of Oxnard Airport. What are they going to replace it with? Houses, shopping centers, a big park, a pool, a paint ball arena, a sports arena, a big fancy hotel, a community college, a high school, a performing arts center, a gym, etc.

Or maybe they could spread cement on the whole thing. It would be freaky to just run in the middle of it, look around, and realize that "yes" there it nothing else around you. I think we need that kind of realization right now.

We should build a stadium for our new NFL team: The Oxnard Peacocks, or The Oxnard Bussy Bees, or The Oxnard Oxes, or The Oxnard Scarecrows.

We should build a big, huge pool, covering the whole area. We could put on pirate shows and swimming races. We could even have the fireworks show there. On Christmas, we could freeze it up and skate on it.

No, I think what we need there is...

The person(s) in the SUV should sue the City of Oxnard for failure to take any actions on the airport despite numerous warnings, the County of Ventura for maintaining a nuisance and a safety hazard, and the FAA for insisting that the airport be allowed to operate with no restrictions. The authorities have been warned over and over that it is not a case of IF but a case of WHEN. Look at the list of incidents and it is obvious this will continue. Eventually, someone is going to be killed.

Oxnard airport is a vital asset that the naysayers refuse to admit. The airport has been instrumental in protecting Ventura county for fire fighting efforts, Angel Flights, and commerical flights connecting people to the rest of the country without going to LAX. The truth is that Ventura county has in the past years refused to work on needed improvements for an airport which gets federal funds. There is no other city services that deals with transportation, and can claim it is not funded by city tax payer dollars. The city and county receive federal funds to maintain the airport. The airport is a vital link to lifeflights, patient transportation for cancer treatment. Is Tim Riley and Denis O'Leary ready to accept responsibility for the deaths of cancer patients not able to get to much need treatment centers far away. Losses of homes and property because there is no staging centers for firefighters to fight brush fires. And continue to accept millions of dollars lost in travel time because of our already congested freeway system to travel to LAX or Burbank to get a connecting flight?

Oxnard Airport has only had 21 incidents since 1962, not all of them fatalities. No other form of transportation in VC has that kind of record including the VC School System school busses who carry thousands of students every day. Before you dismantle the airport, better get rid of the real hazards first: School busses, roads, cars, boats, and lawyers.

If Oxnard Airport is such a vital asset, why does it continually operate at a financial loss?

Walter, the things you mentioned, Life Flights and fire fighting, could just as easily be staged out of Camarillo Airport and, in some cases, more efficiently. It's only because of the elitist attitude of Camarillo's City Council that more operations are NOT conducted from what is a better airport, both location wise and facility wise. As far as travel to LAX, it is cheaper and usually more convenient to take one of the airport shuttle services. The idea of spending about $300.00 for a 35 minuteflight is ridiculous.

Steve,

You must have better perspective than our rescue and volunteer services that currently use Oxnard Airport for their lifesaving missions. Maybe you can round up these heroes and show them why Camarillo is the better alternative. Heck, maybe you have a cape on under your shirt and we won't need helicopters or airplanes because we've got you.

Many businesses and individuals benefit from the access that Oxnard Airport provides to our county.

As an aside, this was the airport that helped to connect Ronald Reagan to our county (since he used Oxnard airport frequentially). His access to Oxnard helped to cement his decision to place the RR Presidential library in our county.

You many not have the business needs that require $300 plane tickets. But there is a marketplace for many who do. Airport access supports an economic community engine you are short sighted to recognize.

I'd suspect the airport was here before you. I'm sure that wouldn't matter because the world obviously revolves around STEVE BURATTI. :P

First of all Oxnard airport will not and cannot close down for at least 20 years because of federal funding from the FAA. I would assume by that time Steve will most likely be dead or a real grumpy old man if he already isn't. Everytime that the airport or any airport for that matter takes from the fund the clock is reset for 20 years. Even if they tried to close it down it will cost the city millions of dollars that Steve would probably complain could be used to fix the deteriorating roads in Oxnard instead. Camarillo cannot be used because it lacks the security measures already in place for Oxnard. Also, less flights would be able to go into Camarillo due to the instrument approach procedures and the lack of navigation equipment in place there that Oxnard already has. But Steve must be some aviation expert that just knows all this stuff. Sorry, folding paper planes does not make you an expert. He must also not realize that when he wants his overnight package from UPS/DHL, the Post office, etc. that it is carried by air to Oxnard on a daily basis. Besides the airport does create lots of tax revenue for the county or city. Also to note, who wants to drive to LAX for an hour and then wait 2 hours for security when you can just leave out of here? Accidents happen everyday in society and for the amount of flight hours logged flying is far safer than driving. People like Steve belong riding the bus. Do us all a favor Steve, you drive to LAX to catch your flights since you probably have taken a flight out of here because it was closeby and affordable, people like you don't deserve to utilize this benefit. As far as Tom Riley, we have accidents in school buses more often then a plane crash where kids are not buckled and end up getting killed in these accidents; some of these deaths could be prevented but ACCIDENTS can and do happen no matter what you are doing. If you don't know aviation I suggest you just keep your mouth shut Steve, Tom and Denis.

Keep Oxnard Airport; dump nut cases like Denis O'Leary. OxAirport is not at fault for a pilot's situation. Thank goodness no one died.

What should go is the city officals/planners who are the idoits that have approved the land around the airport to be used for resdential/schools etc..... it should have been all commercial use that was previously planned in the early 90s. But it doesnt help that city, county officals have their own agenda with the land they personally OWN around the airport.

STEVE!!! YOU ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF BY YOUR TRAVEL AGENT!

I just went $139 roundtrip to las vegas leaving from oxnard......so if you like sitting in traffic and standing in security lines two hours before your flight, continue wasting that $70 or more roundtrip on the shuttle to lax.

One more thing Steve do the airport and yourself a favor by moving away from the flightpath. It was there before you were and you chose to live under it.

Closing airports is not about public safety. It is ALWAYS about real estate development and the big money that can be made developing such large parcels in urban environments.

Look for the connections between the loudest voices for closure and the ones who stand to profit from it.
